To POP or not to POP

Devastating tornadoes recently hit the Kentucky/Southern Indiana area.  A producer from the Fox station in Charlotte Louisville wrote to ask "Do you do a POP in these situations?"  He'd like your opinion of exactly where the line is.  Here is the spot he eventually produced -- choosing to let the people tell the story.



I think this is the only type of spot you can do at this point - along with any kind of community relief efforts.  Any type of promo drum beating/"We warned you first/First on the scene/the only station with..." is just insensitive.   TV stations are there to serve the community... forget rating points and building your weather image right now.    I think being there to document the events and providing a service to your community is the only way to go.

Share your thoughts on POPs during extreme circumstances?

My heart goes out to the people of this area.   Judging by this video -- they've been through hell.

These have become somewhat of a tradition for the ABC station in Phoenix.  Here are this year's Oscar-themed IDs that ran Sunday during (the dreadfully boring) Oscar telecast.

Here is a Super Bowl spot from WIS in Columbia, SC. It promotes our Chief Meteorologist without the threats of violence. And by that, I mean - we involved children.

We're In It Together

From Fox17 in West Michigan, this campaign sets out to "promote that sense of community and the fact that we ALL are in this life--world, whatever you want--together."



And a weather campaign: "a breaking news promo and a severe weather promo that are the exact opposite of what you normally see. There are no weather guys in front of a green screen, no technology discussions, and I tried to avoid any mention of breaking news in a breaking news promo. I still had one "breaking" in there though."

Dominoes

A spot created for the Super Bowl from WBIR in Knoxville -- the producer tells me "After this I have added dominoes to the list of children and pets as things to avoid working with."
