New WCBS WX Promos

Here are some spots from WCBS in New York. I'm not sure if I like them - as the ones WCCO did were infinitely better. I think its the talent that I don't like in these... they seem... silly. The production is nice and simple - but it makes the weather weasels look less than credible. I think the point is to show how much these people know about weather - but it comes across as trivial.

Check em out...

I guess I am old school. I like them. they remind me of the Fritz Coleman spots from KNBC in the late eighties, and early nineties. Which led to the Fritz and Fred Spots, which I blatantly ripped off in at least two markets.

They aren't bad - they just aren't as good as the WCCO ones. Those seemed less silly in the delivery.

Maybe I'm just getting jaded in my old age.

Say what you want about them, but the age 6-13 demographic has shot up 84% since these spots started airing.

I thought these were condescending and silly (not in a good way). It just felt like they were talking to children, or mentally challenged adults.

I like the WCCO spots better too. But I like these. They position the team as experts in a light, fun way. And I didn't think they were too condescending in their delivery.

It's much better than the alternative, which has been to shoot over the Chief shoulder as he points at isobars on the screen to the junior meteorologists. Those shots are as tired as the 'bad ass, folded arm' investigator shots.

There were a few that didn't bother me. I believe they were the versions that featured their female talent. She wasn't too over the top and they were a bit more scientific. I'm not sure what it is that I don't like about these, but they don't make me feel like I'm going to get reliable weather from these guys...
