Hey Twit! Do You Twitter?

I'm not really sure why anyone would care that I ate Pop Tarts for breakfast this morning - but apparently ALL OF AMERICA cares. Well, maybe not about my poptarts - but Twitter has become a major deal very quickly.

Does your station Twitter? They should. We use it for two reasons -- sending headlines from our website and to send promotional messages.

One piece of advice - when following people - think quality, not quantity. There is a cap of 2000 people you can follow, so its best to follow people who are in your DMA. No sense sending out your well crafted promo lines to some guy in Australia.

Anyone else have any great Twitter advice? We're all probably in the same boat - trying to figure this out and make the time invested worth it.

Your post was a little confusing.
There is a limit on the number of people you can follow, but it changes based on the number of people who are following you. Best thing to do is follow as many people as you can, obviously emphasis on your DMA or important info sources. But try to keep your following number close to your followers number.

You get messages from people you follow. People who follow you get your messages. You can have people who follow you, but you don't follow them.

I'll have to try that anonymous -- but when we tried to go over 2000, it wouldn't let us follow anyone else. We're now over 1600 followers - so maybe it will allow more now?

I don't think this is much different than all the other technology that has come before. Unless the consumer is getting something useful, it's just advertising and they will turn away from that in droves. Just like on cell phones and e-mail blasts, if you're giving news info, weather forecast or radar (on the phone) they'll like you. If you're annoying them with "who's on Ellen/Oprah" or Watch Lost tonight, it's a waste of their time and yours. If they really want that, they'll go Ellen's twitter or the ABC site. It's all about content.
