Sincerest Form of Flattery!?

Check out WJBF in Augusta, GA -- they took our Facebook fan spot and did their own version.

Here's the one we did:

And theirs:

My fav line in theirs: "Edit this promo!"

Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery! :)

There is soooo much of this going on.
Copying promos from other stations.
Who has a problem with it?
I don't mind as long as our company does not own a competing station in the market.
I am interested to hear others opinions on this.

It's happening more and more because everyone is posting and sharing their work online. The one and only time I "borrowed" someone else's spot idea, I made sure to ask and then give credit to the originator.

Man up, be honest and give credit where credit is due.

My only concern is someone using a copied spot on their resume reel or even entering it for an award.

I once had Magid show me a great spot from another market as an example. Trouble was - it was an exact copy of a spot I did that won a CBS Eye on Excellence Award. The spot was so similar - I was convinced they'd just put their logo on my spot.

Copy if that's what you need to do... don't try and take credit to further your career. That's my two cents.

I did have another spot copied by several markets. Only one CSD called me to tell me they loved it so much they were doing their own version. I give that guy a lot of credit... plus, they added to the spot with some great ideas of their own! Calling was a classy thing to do.

I agree. It's okay to copy a spot without submitting it. Although I feel if you do a spot that's been done, you should add something special of your own to it (like the edit this promo line). Right now, my station is making me copy other station's spots and it's driving me crazy. But each time I try to add my own touch and outdo the original.

i think getting inspired by the work of others is fine, but that was straight-up copying.

they even stole the taco joke!
