My New Canon t3i

I recently purchased a Canon t3i. I've wanted to take up photography and with the HD video feature - it was a great camera.

Several people I know are now shooting on these cameras and I thought we should use this page as a learning forum. If you have any tips - or stories about your camera or photos -- fill us in.

So far, my favorite lens is the "Nifty 50" - a fixed lens that's great for depth of field.

Having come from a video background -- its kind of fun learning all the photography aspects. Websites, videos, links to your work, etc are welcome comments as well.

That's a great camera! I have a T2i and have used it for many station promos. I actually prefer to our Panny HPX170. The 50mm 1.8 is a great lens. I also recommend the 16-35mm 2.8L. Its a little pricey but you get a nice wide zoom at a constant aperture. Here's a couple promos I used the T2i with, using the 50mm 1.8:

I think Tim made a great point, Don. When considering a lens(especially for for video), constant aperture is a must. You loose a whole lot of light and get jarring video flicker when zooming on a variable lens.

I just bought the Canon 5D Mark 2...it's technically my wife's cam...but I plan to use it for station promos and other projects...can't wait!

I have been using a Canon 5d for almost a year now at the ad agency I am working at. I come from a news photog background so I was used to the big cams. However, the switch has been great, we use it for internet videos and commercial spots. It takes great pictures but has it downfalls (changing lenses, aliasing, no XLR audio input, mediocore codec and a sub par HDMI Output)

These camera forums have a lot of info on these cameras: dvxuser.com and cinema5d.com.

These Canon cameras perform better in daylight rather than tungsten lights, under tungsten lighting they get too oarngy and under some flourscent lights there is a yellow tint. So gel your lights to daylight or you could invest in cheap CFL lights that are daylight balanced.

Here is a link to a commercial we shot with these cameras: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yWJU02mFxWc

Love the feedback guys! Between me, my boss, our department, by buddies in Orlando and even my fav Howard Stern - are all new to these kinds of cameras.

The more we share - the better we all learn.

Has anyone had experience with the Lensbaby composer? Seemed interesting - and then i saw a pretty dull video on it and it lost some steam with me. Anyone use it?

I know KPRC in Houston shot with one before and the shots were amazing.

One of our reporters uses a LensBaby on her personal camera when shooting videos. She LOVES the results even though she says it can be temperamental when on the move.

I have used my t2i exclusively to shoot video now. I picked up a time lapse controller http://cgi.ebay.com/Timer-Remote-Shutter-Canon-Rebel-T1i-T2i-XS-XSi-XTI-/120669590147?pt=Camera_Camcorder_Remotes&hash=item1c1877d283 for about $20 on ebay and use it all the time for time lapse photography.

Here is one I set up when we were ripping out the set at KTVX in Salt Lake City
