Watch this spot and think about when was the last time you went the extra mile on a sweeps promo.
Are you shooting for your spots? Are you developing concepts?
This is a great example of what we can do - if we take the time to do it. Check out this identity theft promo from KXAS in Dallas:

Great spot! They obviously knew what they had to promote well in advance of the story airing. Amazing what you can do when you have time to be creative and money to produce the props. Kudos to the producer responsible.
Love the spot visuals and it's a great concept. Hate the copy line: "The laws won't protect you, NBC 5 will".
Viewer's will call your bullsh*t on that one. I think a story like this that's been done to death requires you to sell some more specifics, which can be a battle with the newsroom & bosses because they think you're "giving it all away".
But hey if it got the station the ratings they wanted, who gives a crap what I think?!
Great concept. I agree with Anonymous about the "NBC 5 will protect you" line. I think the spot gave up how thieves are stealing identities (taking pictures with cell phones). Overall...good spot-well shot, edited, use of graphics. There's no way that spot would make it at my shop...there was no "today" hook--blah.
Great concept, well shot and edited... great sound design. But I also agree that this story has been done to death and viewers will assume that this is "old news". I wasn't promised any specifics on how NBC5 was going to help me. But I'm definitely not going to wear my "pin number" T shirt anymore. This concept would also work great for a consumer image promo.
I'm very impressed with the concept and execution, but I have to agree that this is a story that has been Done. To. Death. Having said that, though, I wonder when the story aired. Perhaps this promo is from a time when this sort of thing was just becoming news.
I agree this story is old - but I think the key point here is the production value.
I'm not sure when this was done - but I think it is a great example of what you can do with a spot when you put effort into it.
When I worked in San Antonio - we shot for every single sweeps piece we did. It was expected. As a producer - we tried to outdo each other... which was great, friendly competition.
When you go the extra mile and not rely on news footage and maybe some graphics - you can come up with some great spots. This particular spot took some budget - but this concept probably could have been done on the cheap.
I just put it up to encourage us all to push ourselves during sweeps. Its well worth it.
