Hey Don-
Maybe this promo will help answer your question:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0LYpxg14r3U
We aggressively use social media as a way to promote programming and news stories as well as getting feedback and story ideas from our viewers. Our strategy is working well. Not only have we been able to engage our viewers on a more personal level, we'v really seen a significant increase in traffic to our website from our social media sites.
Uggg... another video from a "social media expert" describing the "revolution".
First things first, social media IS the internet. It's just the evolution of it. So the stat comparing it to the embracing of the internet is useless.
Look, social media isn't going away. Any media company still thinking it's a fad is extremely stupid or just looking to die.
That being said, while it needs to be embraced, it certainly isn't the savior of local media. And I'm sick of people calling it "revolutionary". The internet was the revolution. Not social media...
So where does that leave us? It leaves us about five years behind everyone else. Blogging was "the thing" in 2003! Facebook came out in 2004. Youtube got big in 2005. Twitter was 2007. And we're just now talking about it?!?!
Media companies need to BE the future (the smart & semantic web - 3.0) and not just looking at the present (social media - 2.0).

My GM still thinks the Internet is overrated. Probably because not much traffic comes to his dismal website.
