Facebook Fans!

I've been working on building our station's Facebook page.  I've looked around - and found one station that has over 40,000 fans!  WJZ in Baltimore.
How are you using your station's page to market?  Ways you are building fans quickly?

Share your success stories with the class!

The most important thing is to engage many departments in your station to add content to the facebook page. If you just leave it up to one person then it won't work.

At WBNS our Online Managing Editor is the main contributor/manager. But Marketing, Programming, Weather, Sports and the News departments also add content.

We'll put up programming notices (like when we preempted Oprah for weather coverage), we upload sweeps spots (great way to get early feedback from comments) and our news/sports departments do a great job with posing questions and airing the answers in the newscasts (i.e., Did you think Tiger's apology was genuine?)

One word of caution... check it often for people trying to post links to their business. I delete those immediately. You want to advertising from us? Buy it. :)

Lastly, a key thing is making sure your anchors weigh in every day. Make fan pages for ALL of your anchors and invite viewers to be a fan of their favorite TV people. Then, make sure they are checking it daily and talking back to viewers. Our anchors are fantastic at it and, thankfully, they genuinely enjoy it.

I’ll forward this link to our Online Managing Editor (the Bot we affectionately call him) and see if he has anything to add… One of the best in the business, he knows much more than I.

Thanks for sharing the info Frank. My stations seems a little disorganized & is missing the mark with facebook right now. We are in the process of getting a more consistent message out there. I really appreciate you sharing what has worked for you.
