Please Watch Something Else

A peculiar stunt took place during MTV's Video Music Awards.

During the show, VH1 aired a looping graphic that urged viewers to switch the channel and watch MTV instead. Sponsored by Taco Bell!

Now, I get that VH1 and MTV are owned by the same people - but why would VH1 just go "dark"?? And why would Taco Bell sponsor this?

And better yet - as MTV took commercials - VH1 took comemrcials of their own. Now, if you were an advertiser and your spot had been put into one of these breaks - wouldn't you feel cheated?

Because the buzz it generates (it went viral on this blog, right?) is far greater than the commercial value.

Free pub. Brilliant idea.

This is yet another reason why Viacom shouldn't be allowed to own any cable networks. They run what, 10 MTV channels now, and every time they launch a new "music" channel a year later it becomes yet another rerun/marathon channel for the same shows that air on a dozen other channels.

Why not shut down Spike, MTV 2 through 20, TV Land, and everything else they own every time a show premieres on MTV? Maybe that's what cable TV should be... 20 channels promoting one channel, with simultaneous comercials on each. It'd save a ton on programming costs! The sad part is, would anybody notice the difference?
