New York Spots

The folks at WPIX in New York are promising to "change local news"... not sure what they have in store but here are two teaser spots:

The number one station in town, WABC,  has this spot promoting what's worked wonders for them for years -- something WPIX would call "tired old news":

PIX 11 is bringing breaking up its longtime (since 1998, I think) team of Kaity Tong and Jim Watkins and bringing in Jodi Applegate to anchor the 10:00. They've added a bunch of commentary pieces with lots of editing and I think they're going to do lots of quick cuts in the newscast itself. We'll see what happens.

If you put that Eyewitness 7 spot on mute it's pretty awesome. Great editing and transition effects.

Hey Don, it would be nice to hear your take on some of these spots.

What did you think about the mystique of those first two spots? Do you think the under sell and promise of change will get eyeballs?

Paul, that's how I watched it the first time since I didn't have my speakers turned on. WABC's spots are always tighly edited like that... very slick work on their part.

As for WPIX, we'll see. Tribune's good at promising the moon and not delivering.

Paul is so right.. For us, Silence should be golden effectiveness. (I think you should be charging for that 'turn the sound off and watch' lesson!) As for WPIX.. the concept reminds me of launch spots from San Diego when the station nabbed FOX affiliation. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tDFBWSf6_HI

Yeah -- WABC looks great, sounds like dookie.

From the "hard-boiled" read of the VO (I'm sure it's bad direction and not the limitation of the VO), the "on the street, in the air, etc" copy and the 80's music, it's comic/painful to hear.
