Judgement Day

From the "I wish I'd done that" file... two IDs from TV38 in Boston.

We actually talked about making light of it in our topicals Friday - but were unsure if we would "offend."

What do you think? Did any of you get creative with the "last day of earth"??

Tacky... No.
Hilarious... Yes.

But, what creative department in the country has time enough to produce and traffic single run spots like these?

If that is the case, then, are there any job openings?

I'm sure the folks in Joplin, Missouri would find it really funny...especially with all the doomsday damage they experienced over the weekend...great job guys....not.

@Anony

Really!? Your promo team exploits the murders, fires, and deaths of poor people for ratings every night but THIS tongue n cheek ID that aired on an ENTERTAINMENT channel in Boston, mocking a hardly mainstream religious group's attention-getting sideshow that the news media over-hyped, you suggest offends Joplin, Missouri?

Your faux-outrage is showing...

I don't fault you for trying to defend your spot dude...just saying if it was my shop...we'd be spending more time on other things that might actually get us ratings or revenue...don't you have episodes of Judge Judy you can promote? But, to each his/her own.

Ohh I get it. I call you on your faux outrage and now you resort to "ratings and revenue" as justification. Please... it's an ID. Does you station do holiday or community event IDs that also serve a brand reinforcement purpose? This is 38's equivalent.

Honestly, do you think Adult Swim / TBS / TNT / Nick@Nite's creative (which is waaaay more extreme/out there/wacky/dramatic than this) isn't "ratings and revenue" driven?

You're right. Why do strategic creative that appeals to audiences on emotional levels validating their own identities in your product when you can just tag and bag a Judge Judy promo? It's all the same.

Plus, they spelled JUDGMENT wrong.

This is going to shock you...but I'm going to agree with you...and not for the reasons you stated.

You are more qualified to determine what will 'play' in your market...and on your station. I personally don't think this type of thing would be received well in my market, or many others for that matter...but each of us has to know our markets and continue to build relationships with our viewers. As long as we are all doing that...we are doing our jobs as creative and marketing professionals.

Thanks for the spirited discussion!

Here's my take -- I believe this is a market by market decision. In some -- it would play terribly. In others, like Sacramento for example, that would play great.

It was designed for a specific audience that has been marketed to with very creative, inventive, humorous promotion.

The TBS/Adult Swim/etc example is spot on. This is not a news station. TV38 is entertainment and should be marketed to as such.

It may not be your cup of tea... but it doesn't mean its wrong for the market/audience.

Get off your high horse.
