Joke Promo

This is from the Fox station in Washington, DC:

Here is the info posted on youtube about the spot:

This is a joke piece that WTTG ran for Halloween 2007.

It did run several times on-air but, again, was just a joke.

I must be getting old and cranky - but I just don't think it is ever a good idea to do these kinds of spots. What does this say about you? That your team looks good in tights? Even if it only ran a few times - I just don't get the joke. This was funny for the people who put it together - but do the viewers have any other response than to roll their eyes?

I agree with you. Don't have poke fun at your people. Poke fun at anchor stereotypes, but not your people. Plus, this wasn't even funny.

Funny ain't easy. It rarely works. Usually viewers are laughing at you, not with you, because you're showing just how far out of touch and unhip you really are. That is the case here. There's a place for humor in promos, but they clearly missed the mark.

Weather has never looked so...

Well, I won't go there, but this definitely hurts the weather team's image.

I've tried my hand at incorporating humor and weather and found out the hard way it doesn't work. I have no problem with showcasing talent as a fun loving, laid back folks people to rid of that anchorman stereotype, but not at the expense of their credibility.

Viewers don't take us anywhere near as seriously as we take ourselves.

Funny is hard - but when done well it is your most effective marketing communication.

On the flip side, and as those spots demonstrate, bad funny hurts.

my warped sense of humor digs it.

the thing i like is that it shows the talent having fun, makes them relatable to me, and all of the OTHER weirdos out there.

plus, it's a joke-let's all lighten up a bit ;-)

I found this video to be super funny. It's a simple joke not anything serious. Lighten up a bit.

I'm not trying to be a jerk here - but anyone who thinks this spot is "super funny" is probably not far enough in life and their career to know that this type of thing can do huge damage to your station.

I love a good joke and a promo that uses humor wisely can be a home run - but this was aired and it was horribly unfunny and made the team look like morons.

I'm sure a promo where they farted would be right up your alley too.
