Friday Night Lights Promo

Lots of money was sunk into this. Talent spent their time on a special set shooting their parts. But the people who made the spot forgot to ask what the show was about.

Oops!

You could argue that the song and setting show off the small town aspect of the show... but the promo makes it seem like some sort of magical/mysterious/spooky kind of show.

Off the mark... plain and simple.

Cool, it must be the latest new scifi show in a place called Devil Town.

Oh it's not? It's about small town football? Uh.

Wow, they should be flagged for a personal foul or promo misconduct.

Does this mean they're turning FNL into a gridiron "Passions"?

Do you guys watch the show? It's more about the relationships then it is about high school football. This show has been struggling to get viewers. Many think it's about small town football and nothing else. I like the fresh approach. Those who watch the show aren't going away; they know what the show's about. But maybe FNL will pull in some new viewers with this spot. Too bad I'll have to wait for it to air on NBC.

I usually agree with you on things scooter, but I'm still concerned that this spot misleads non-fans into thinking its some sort of spooky/mystery show.

If they like the promo, want to see a show that seems to be reflected by this promo - won't they be disappointed when they see what the show really is?

You're right - its not about football, but about relationships. But I think this promo leads me to believe its something entirely different.

It's not a football show, but my guess is the research said people hadn't watched because they think it's a football show. Translated to the agency brief: Don't make the spot about football so we'll get female demos.

Grey's Anatomy is not about medicine either. Here's how they go for male demos, without saying anything about a hospital:

Maybe they think that once you get there, you'll like the show so much you'll keep coming back. It's a desperation move, since their core viewership is small and they need to grow sampling for the show to stay on the air.

Whether they were going for a different demo or not, it just doesn't matter.

It's off the mark.

i dig the feel...i think it will work in attracting the younger crowd.

it looks very "across the universe" to me (which is, my favorite movie!)

i agree there should be a subtle football reference somewhere, but maybe more in the audio? fans roaring at some point? a whistle? that would be enough to intrigue me further.
