Station Sued Over Promo
This promo makes it look like Milwaukee has a bad cop on the streets.
Now, the police officer is suing. Watch the promo - and then read what was really going on.
Cleverly written around the facts... the truth is the station allegedly knew he had done nothing wrong. According to details - the cop was called to the scene where a man had busted out a window of a taxi cab.
The driver wanted $300 for damages - so the cop went to the ATM to get the cash for the cabbie.
The officer was cleared of any wrongdoing - TWO MONTHS BEFORE this investigation "months in the making" was aired.
Ouch. Thoughts?

Boston Strong
How can a television station respond after tragedy?
Following the Boston bombings - my colleagues in Boston had to go to work the next day and ask themselves that question. Some had ran in the race -- and this was very emotional for them.
WBZ put together the following spots that highlighted their connection to the community -- and gave viewers a glimmer of hope at a time their community was heartbroken.

11Alive in Atlanta has just launched this new spot featuring Andrew Young - the former Mayor of Atlanta, who was a leader in
civil rights. He was a very close friend of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and was with him
at the time of his death.
The producer told me: "The focus with this relaunch campaign is to identify with the core of audience of Atlanta. Rather than show our anchors; or talk about ourselves, we wanted to acknowledge the people of Atlanta are what matter most, and it is their stories of hope that make Atlanta what it is."

Rollin' with Drolen
A fun spot out of Dallas. Their traffic reporter is named Whitney Drolen -- so the folks at KTVT teamed up with Stephen Arnold Music to create this catchy tune.
To be honest, I'd watch this woman read a phone book.
Phonin' with Drolen. I like the sound of that.
(c) IDOPROMOZ, INC
Great job David and the team -- this will definitely help viewers remember her quickly. Very memorable.

The Slap!
Saw this promo from Tampa on FTVLive(now free!)
Apparently - the promo dept is trying to decide if they should run it or not.
My take? Run it! It gives their investigative reporter a spark of personality that no one else has.
Its memorable in the often forgettable world of local tv news.

Court Block
Here is Sacramento, we've started using the cast of our popular "Good Day Sacramento" show - to promote the rest of the day's lineup.
We had fun with a few Judge Judy clips here.

Dallas Does Things BIG
UPDATE: I jumped the gun posting the spot yesterday. Here is the final version, in which they fixed the "Everynight" issue.
From our friends in Dallas -- who always come up with cool visuals -- this spot is big... over the top... and unlike anything you've seen before in a local news promo.

More humorous spots from WFAA for their morning man Ron Corning. Some of these venture into some uncharted territory for news promos... I'm curious how they play to the audience.

TVNEWSCHECK
From our friend Paul Greeley:
Every
Monday on TVNEWSCHECK.COM, I’ll be writing a weekly column called,
Market Share. The column will focus on local TV news marketing and I’m
hoping it’ll be a must read for those involved in local TV news and its
marketing.
Check out this week’s article here:
Viewers testify to WFTV’s News Prowess
Each
week, Market Share will focus on the challenges and successes local TV
stations experience in their markets. You’ll see links to marketing
examples from stations around the country representing markets large and
small.
You’ll
hear from local TV station executives and writer/producers about the
competitive situation they face in their market and how the creative
they made is designed to influence viewers, change their perspective.
The articles will be honest and positive, with thoughtful analysis and insight.
I
encourage you to use the comment section to add your thoughts about the
work profiled or to suggest ideas for future articles.
If
there’s something you’d like to share that’s going on at your station
or in your market, I’d like to hear about it. We’re looking for success
stories, creative campaigns, new techniques in advertising and marketing
campaigns designed to recruit new viewers to your news. Whatever you
can and want to share.
If you’ve got any questions, please contact me.

3-2-1... Look natural!
UPDATE: YES! They have a new ID online marked revised. This one has two shots.
But his head movement is still pretty bad. My favorite part? It appears they have their logo dancing around a bit onscreen to maybe distract you from his head? :)

In this morning news ID from WAVE3 in Louisville -- pay attention to the the guy in the stripped yellow tie.
No smile... and awkward head movements that look like he may be signaling someone that he's been kidnapped and forced to be in this.
It is a morning show. Shouldn't you pretend to be likeable?

FTVLive Now Free!
For any of you who follow the ins and outs of the TV news business, this will come as good news.
FTVLive, an industry insider website, has gone from being a pay website to being absolutely free.
Now, IDOPROMOZ has always been free. Because I care about you. (And I've yet to figure out how to get anyone to pay for it!)
But I digress.
Check out the newly free FTVLive at:

Blockhead
UPDATE: Here are some of my favorite pieces of the campaign -- show IDs.
WBZ's sister station had a mascot of sorts a few years back named Blockhead. They used him to promote their syndicated programming.
Here are some spots that were just posted online that help introduce the character. You can search "Blockhead" on this site to find a few more spots from back then.
Absolutely a great campaign.

Holy Shit I Want To Go Back to Bed!
From Miami, a couple of examples of a "pop-ical" -- part POP of the morning news and part topical push to the next day.
Sold with a "If you didn't watch - here's what you missed" approach.
Problem is -- who really wants to wake up to THIS???

New Graphics Image
Well, I've never seen this before. A promo dedicated to telling people the station is getting new graphics.
Actually, their point is solid. They're saying their old graphics sucked and their new ones are better. Clear. Clean. Easy to digest.
What do you think? Do viewers care? Is a promo the right forum for this or should the newscast handle it?
Take a look from WUSA in DC.
